HEAT Coaches

Robert Coleman – Head Coach
Our head Coach Robert Coleman, has overall responsibility for the coaching program.
Robert began his competitive swimming career as a freshman at Highland Park High School in Dallas, TX, where he swam breaststroke and individual medley, but his love of the water goes back to when he was a child. Robert received his Bachelors of Arts degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder. He majored in Psychology and Sociology, and minored in History.
Robert started his coaching career in college with the Park Cities YMCA “Waves” summer swim team. After graduating from CU in 1993, Robert headed to Athens, Tennessee, where he coached the Athens-McMinn YMCA “Sea Dragons” age-group team as well as the McMinn County High School and McMinn Central High School swim teams. During this time, Robert coached several Tennessee state high school championship meet finalists, as well as numerous YMCA Tri-State champions. Several of Robert’s Tennessee swimmers went on to swim in college. Robert also worked as Aquatics Director for the YMCA.
In 1997, Robert moved back to Texas and became head coach for the Garland Aqua Racers, which was later renamed Dallas Elite Aquatics. While coaching with GAR/DEA, Robert developed and worked with several Texas Age-Group Swimming (TAGS) state qualifiers and finalists, Sectionals qualifiers and Top-16 swimmers. During the 2005 long course season, Dallas Elite Aquatics’ 10-U Boys 200 Medley Relay team was ranked number one in the nation and their 10-U Boys 200 Freestyle relay was ranked third. Robert was also on the coaching staff of the 2004 North Texas All Star and Southern Zone championship teams.
Robert joined the Evergreen Hurricanes as their head coach in September of 2005 and helped guide the team to an 8th place finish at the March, 2006 State Short Course Championships. Likewise, during his time with the Hurricanes, Robert coached two Colorado State Championship high point winners (one of whom won both short course and long course) as well as 5 individual Hurricanes team record breakers. Robert also served on the 2006 Colorado Swimming, Inc. Western Zone Championship Team coaching staff and helped coach the team to a 4th place overall finish.
Robert also served as the Head Coach for Conifer High School’s girls swim team and the inaugural boys swim team. At the end of the boys first ever season, they finished 10th in the state and then finished 8th in their second year. The girls team qualified their first two individuals for the girls state meet in more than 3 years. During Robert’s second season with the girls team, they qualified 3 different individuals for state in multiple events as well as all three relays (not bad for a team of all freshmen and sophomores and 1 junior).
In his spare time, Robert enjoys a variety of outdoor activities (hiking, biking, fishing, etc…), reading, listening to good music and is a HUGE movie buff. Robert likes to keep up with current events (both in and out of the world of swimming) in order to keep his mind sharp. Robert also enjoys spending time with his friends and family.
